「What do we really know about the mode of action of Bacillus thuringiensis toxins?」 11月5日開催

概 要Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) bacterial strain products make up for more than 95% of the biological control world market.  They are mostly used against insect pests in agriculture, forestry and the public health sectors, and represent safe and environment-friendly alternatives to chemical pesticides. Whereas insects of different orders (mostly lepidoptera, diptera and coleoptera) constitute the main targets of Bt products, other invertebrates, e.g. nematodes, snails, etc., have been shown to be sensitive to some Bt toxins, and in the recent years, several strains of Bt have been discovered which are active against mammalian cancer cells and tissues.

   In the last two decades, extensive research efforts have been made by several laboratories worldwide, including ours, in order to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in Bt toxicity. Significant progress has been achieved with the availability of the three-dimensional atomic structures of a few representative members of the Bt toxin family, the development of powerful genetic and molecular biology tools, and the use of elaborate biophysical approaches like electrophysiology, single cell microspectrofluorescence and light-scattering spectroscopy.

   In this talk, the current knowledge and issues on the pathophysiology and the structure-function relations of the proteic toxins produced by Bt will be presented and critically analysed, with particular reference to their mode of action on target cell membranes.

 

シュワルツ博士の紹介

シュワルツ博士は電気生理学、生物物理学を専門とされ、特にパッチクランプ法や人工膜系での毒素による生体膜孔形成の研究を進められています。

生物農薬として広く利用されているBt菌のCry毒素が、昆虫の中腸上皮細胞膜に小孔を形成することを電気生理学的に初めて証明されました。Cry毒素の作用機構の研究では世界的に知られている研究者の一人です。

今回、共同研究の一環で福岡に来ていただきました。親日家で日本人にはできるだけわかりやすい英語で話してくれます。大学院生などにもいい機会と思いますので、ご参加ください。
